Every year in Dorset we throw away over 240,000 tonnes of household waste. This means that on average every household disposes of nearly one tonne.
At present all of this waste is disposed of in landfilled sites. These site are located in former mineral workings and the waste is used to reclaim the land after mineral extraction.
Until recently we have put out our rubbish in bins, skips and sacks and given little thought to its destination after collection. In the past we have adopted the attitude 'out of sight - out of mind.'
